Scuba Diving & Snorkeling
Acapulco diving tours offer a unique variety of opportunities to the Mexico traveler -- a sunken ship, caves and an interesting array of fish, including trumpet fish, sea horses, manta rays and whale sharks. Snorkeling is also very good at many spots where you can view these fish as well. The average water temperature is 72ºF (24ºC) and visibility ranges from 18 to 35 feet (5 to 16 meters).
- Roqueta -- Glass bottom boats take tourists to this diving and snorkeling spot off Roqueta Island, a favorite for novices looking for shallow and clear waters. Experienced divers love it here too. Just off shore you can view an underwater shrine of the Virgin Mary, the Virgen Sumergida. Guided dives are offered here for ages 12 and up.
- Puerto Marques -- Located 9 miles (15 kilometers) southeast of Acapulco, this bay also offers shallow-water diving and great visibility making it a good choice for scuba diving lessons.
- Caleta and Caletilla – Calm waters for novice divers and snorkelers, excellent visibility, and gorgeous scenery makes this area very popular.
- Icacos – A sunken ship that can be explored by certified divers is a popular Mexico attraction found here. Many of the daily objects (such as bathtubs and dining ware) used by the passengers and crew before the Parts of the Rio de la Plata sank remain in good condition. This beach also offers excellent snorkeling and many fun Mexico vacation activities for families (see Beaches section).
