Big Island Kayaking

Big Island Kayak Tours

Kayaking in Hawaii is an amazing experience, and the Big Island (Hawaii Island) offers some very unique kayaking tours. It's another great way to see and experience the beauty of Hawaii.

Have you ever heard of "Flumin' the Ditch"? If you haven't, you are in for a real treat. The kayking tour takes you down the old Kohala Irrigation Ditch that was built in 1905 for the sugar plantations of the North Kohala District. This is a great example of how the Big Island is replacing the former sugar economy with ecotourism. While kayaking the ditch, with its flumes and tunnels, you will flow through open rainforest and enjoy fantastic views of mountain pastures.

The most popular kayaking destination on the Big Island is the Kealakekua Bay Marine Sanctuary on the Kona side of Oahu.  The water here is clear, calm and teeming with colorful tropical fish and a variety of corals.  If you plan on kayaking in the Kealakekua Bay, be sure to bring snorkel gear because this is also a prime snorkeling site.  Make sure to bring binoculars because Kealakehua Bay is a nursery and rest area for spinner dolphins!

If you plan to visit any of the following islands, check out their kayaking tours as well:

  • Kauai Kayak Tours – Where else in Hawaii can you kayak down a jungle river and along the famous Na Pali Coast?
  • Oahu Kayak Tours – Kayak to secluded off shore islands, surf the coves or take a sunset tour off the North Shore.
  • Maui Kayak Tours – Whale watching, Molokini Crater and Hana, are among the kayaking highlights on Maui.
