Best Beaches in Hawaii - Big Island

The youngest of the Hawaiian Islands, the Big Island doesn't have the miles of white and golden sand beaches that its neighbor islands do. You will however, find some of the best beaches in Hawaii on this island, including several with world wide acclaim. Here's a small sampling... 

• Hapuna Beach – Located on Kohala's sunny coast and a favorite among locals, visitors, and Dr. Beach, this is a picture perfect Hawaiian beach. As you walk down the tree-shaded path, a mile long stretch of white sand with clear, turquoise waters come into view.

• Hapuna Prince Resort - This beach features covered pavilions, palms, and shade trees with a view of the Hapuna Prince Resort at the far end of the beach. Swimming and boogie boarding for all ages is popular here, with Hawaii summer (May through October) providing the gentler and frequently flat surf. When the surf roars in the winter, expert body boarders catch waves off shore.  

• Kauna'oa Beach - Another Big Island beach that is a must-see includes Kauna'oa Beach, voted "The best beach in the world" twice by Conde-Naste. Access is through the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, which limits beach parking to 30 passes a day in order to protect the coral reef and pristine beach.   

• Punalu`u Black Sand Beach - One of the best Hawaii beaches on the east side of the island is Punalu`u Black Sand Beach, known mostly for its sea turtle viewing. 

• Richardson's Beach - Known for its snorkeling, swimming and sheer beauty, Richardson's Beach also provides a beautiful view of turquoise waves crashing on black lava rock outcroppings.
