Orange Walk
The Orange Walk district is a refuge for wildlife and for travelers wishing to escape the crowds. The district is dominated by deep forest of which much is preserved by Programme for Belize. The region is home to some of Belize's most impressive Mayan ruins, and the largest population of birds in the nation of Belize.
Orange Walk Town is 55 miles north of Belize City. The New River that passes through this Belize town was once an active Mayan trading waterway and leads to the ruins of Lamanai that once was a large Mayan city. It still perches impressively over a lagoon on the edge of the New River.
Activities and Attractions
The boat tours that take you down the New River to the sites pass through a jungle alive with wildlife, including crocodiles, big jungle cats, howler monkeys and a large variety of birds. Belize is one of the richest birding areas on the planet. This area is well known for the Mayan ruins.
